ANC Lauds Pule’s Appointment, Amid Backlash
The African National Congress has welcomed the appointment of Dina Pule as the Minister of Social Development, despite widespread backlash from rival political parties and other organisations.
The party has officially acknowledged the latest changes to the Cabinet announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa, viewing this move as a significant step in the government's ongoing effort to support the nation's most marginalised citizens.
“We extend our warm congratulations and wish her strength, wisdom and success as she assumes this important responsibility in the service of the people of South Africa. We are confident that she will discharge her duties with dedication and commitment to improving the lives of the most vulnerable in our society,” the ANC said in a statement.
Opposition parties, including the Democratic Alliance (DA), have strongly rejected the decision and raised concerns regarding the Minister’s previous tenure in office.
They have cited historical findings from the Public Protector and past parliamentary proceedings to challenge the suitability of the appointment for such a critical portfolio.
The Ahmed Kathrada Foundation, on the other hand, views the appointment of Pule with absolute dismay.
“South Africa cannot build a capable, ethical, and developmental state by recycling individuals whose public records are severely tarnished by corruption, nepotism, and dishonesty,” the foundation stated.
The appointment occurs under the President’s constitutional prerogative, as defined in Sections 91 and 93 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa. The ANC maintains that this executive refresh is essential for advancing the constitutional mandate of fostering a capable, ethical, and developmental state.
The governing party has also extended its well wishes to all other newly appointed Ministers and Deputy Ministers tasked with serving the public collectively within the Government of National Unity (GNU).
