An unstoppable first-half flurry of goals signalled Amakhosi’s intent to go far in the CAF Competition

A well-executed first-half onslaught saw Kaizer Chiefs advance to the group stages of the CAF Confederation Cup with an emphatic 3-1 win over AS Simba yesterday, 25 October 2025.

After playing out to a cagey goalless draw in the first leg, Chiefs had left the tie delicately poised. What unfolded in the decisive second leg was, however, not a delicate dance of caution. Rather, it was a sudden, devastating offensive that saw Amakhosi unleash a torrent of three goals in just 26 minutes, effectively shattering the resolve of their Congolese opponents whilst emphatically advancing to the next phase of the competition.

From the first whistle, the tone was set by a Chiefs side that seemed to have shed any inhibitions. They played with a furious pace and intent rarely seen in their recent outings. That intent paid off in the 2nd minute when the new striker, Etiosa Ighodaro, seized his moment when a promising shot was parried by the Simba keeper.

Ighodaro was quickest to react, coolly slotting home his debut goal for the club. It was a crucial, instant reward for the early pressure and, more importantly, the psychological blow that completely unsettled AS Simba. The floodgates had been nudged open, and Chiefs pressed their advantage with a ruthless efficiency that turned the match into a spectacle. Before Simba could reorganise, the Amakhosi doubled their lead in the 14th minute.

A well-worked set-piece saw Zitha Kwinika connect with a superb delivery to make it 2-0 in the 14th. The goal highlighted a new level of tactical preparation, suggesting that the team had rigorously worked on exploiting the visitors’ defensive frailties from dead-ball situations.

Glody Lilepo almost made it 3-0 in the 24th minute with a powerful low shot, but the tactical masterclass culminated in the 25th minute, when Mfundo Vilakazi’s precise corner kick found the head of the very same Lilepo, who made no mistake by guiding the ball into the net to complete the stunning three-goal burst.

Three goals in 25 minutes signalled intentions to keep charging forward in pursuit of the elusive continental glory they yearn for. This victory, therefore, speaks to a level of clinical aggression and decisiveness that has been the missing ingredient in the Chiefs’ continental ambitions for years.

The match was, quite simply, over. While AS Simba managed a late consolation goal in the second half, the damage was already done. This victory is momentous for Kaizer Chiefs. It is the clearest signal yet that they are ready to compete again on the grand stage of African club football.

The journey to the Group Stages provides the invaluable opportunity for their players, both veterans and youngsters, to gain high-level continental experience and to build a winning culture that can be exported back to the domestic league.

This performance against AS Simba was not just a match report; it was a powerful opening chapter in a new story of Chiefs’ continental intent, built on the back of 26 unforgettable, relentless minutes.
