Madlanga Lambasts Johnson’s ‘Useless’ Medical Note
The head of the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC), Andrea Johnson, failed to appear before the Madlanga commission on Monday after her legal team submitted a medical certificate for a sudden illness.
Her absence forced the postponement of her highly anticipated testimony regarding allegations that she protected a senior police official from prosecution.
Her advocate, Langa Bodlani SC, informed the inquiry that she became severely ill on Monday morning and was immediately hospitalised. The submitted medical certificate booked her off from 13 to 15 July 2026, which legally stalled her scheduled appearance.
Commission Chairperson, Justice Mbuyiseni Madlanga, strongly criticised the document and expressed deep dissatisfaction with its lack of detail.
Madlanga noted that the brief note failed to provide any meaningful context about her actual condition.
"I notice that this is one of those medical certificates, the nature of which I’ve previously said is useless, in the sense that they give no information whatsoever.
“It’s not even a case of confidentiality issues. It’s just one of those useless medical certificates,” Madlanga said in disappointment.
Evidence leaders argued that Johnson must appear in person rather than submitting a written statement because her narrative testimony requires direct questioning.
Consequently, the inquiry postponed her appearance and will proceed with other witnesses while a new date is finalised.
