Top Hawks Probe Khan Attack
The South African Police Service has deployed its most senior investigative units to probe an apparent assassination attempt on Deputy Head of Crime Intelligence, Major General Feroz Khan.
He was shot on Sunday evening on 3rd Avenue in Houghton, Johannesburg, just days before his scheduled appearance at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry on 1 July.
Police confirmed that Khan survived the attack and is receiving medical care while the circumstances of the shooting remain under investigation.
Acting National Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General, Puleng Dimpane, placed the case under a multi-unit task force led by the Gauteng Hawks, Gauteng Crime Intelligence, and the SAPS Detective Service.
Dimpane also instructed the Political Killings Task Team to join the probe to ensure all angles are thoroughly covered.
“The Political Killings Task Team will ensure every possible lead is pursued and those behind the shooting are identified and arrested.
“It would be premature and irresponsible to speculate on a motive before investigators have established the facts,” Dimpane stated.
Dimpane further revealed that detectives will follow the evidence wherever it leads and treat any attempt to intimidate judicial participants as a priority.
She added that the police service would meet any interference with the commission’s work with the full might of the law.
Dimpane strongly condemned the attack and wished the Major General a speedy recovery.
“I am reassuring the public that SAPS is committing maximum resources to the investigation.
“No effort will be spared in identifying, tracing and arresting those responsible,” she said.
The SAPS acknowledged widespread public speculation linking the attack to his highly anticipated testimony but warned against making premature conclusions.
Investigators have appealed for any helpful information from members of the public as the high-level investigation continues.
