Popular DJ switches from Amapiano to Afro music

DJ Maphorisa stunned South Africans when he officially announced that he’ll be reverting to where history began.

The popular Amapiano icon - real name Themba Sekowe- took to his Instagram Stories to share the news, writing: “Amapiano is in good hands. I’m going back to my roots, where it all started: AFRO!!!!!!”

Maphorisa has made a name for himself for his fire music blends and affiliations across Africa and beyond. His uniqueness has sparked collaborations with big music heavyweights like Wiz Kid any more.

His adaptability to producer all genres has made him widely desired.

The shift has been met with widespread support from fans and fellow musicians. On Instagram, DJ Zinhle commented: “Let’s go.”

Fans on X (formerly Twitter) showed great support.

“Yep, 3-step is popping now. He’s coming for all these small boys,” wrote one X user, @Olfactory Scents.

Another user, @Sarabi, struck a more cautious and pessimistic tone.

“Is it me or is he seeing a sinking ship? We’re having fewer bangers kwiPiano by the day,” Serabi wrote.

User @kgomotsokaalfootza predicted a strong return saying: “I know your comeback will have influence in re-popularising AfroHouse.”

One thing is for certain, the conversation has shifted. It’s no longer about what Phori was, but about what he has bravely chosen to become.
