Gauteng Targets Zero Easter Fatalities

As the Easter weekend traffic peaks, the focus in Gauteng has shifted from routine patrols to a high-pressure safety blitz.

With law enforcement out in full force, the mission is to prevent a repeat of last year’s tragedy where 167 people lost their lives on South African roads.

Authorities have been deployed along all major highways exiting the province to boost visibility and enhance safety. The provincial strategy targets the specific habits that turn festive travel into a crisis.

“Over speeding, unsafe overtaking, reckless and negligent driving and overloaded vehicles, including trailers and public transport carrying many passengers, are the major contributing factors to road crashes during this period,” Gauteng traffic police spokesperson, Sello Maremane, said.

Beyond speed, officials are strictly monitoring vehicle capacity to ensure motorists reach their destinations in one piece.

“Overloading compromises vehicle stability, increases braking distance, increases the risk of tyre bursts, and significantly raises the likelihood of serious and fatal accidents,” Maremane added.

Similar road safety measures are expected to be rolled out when road users make their way back into the province after the Easter weekend.
