The search for the Ekurhuleni MMC for Roads and Transport, Andile Mngwevu, has come to a tragic end after his remains were discovered on Tuesday in Mozambique.

Mngwevu’s remains, along with those of three other individuals he was traveling with, were found inside their vehicle after they had been missing for over a week.

The vehicle was swept away by the recent severe floods that devastated parts of Mozambique, specifically in Chokwe Village where the incident occurred.

Elijah Mhlanga, the spokesperson for Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi, stated that the government is deeply saddened by the tragic passing of Mngwevu and has committed to supporting the bereaved family.

“We will be supporting the family during this difficult time, and once again we convey our deepest condolences to the family of the MMC together with the person he was within the vehicle,” said Mhlanga.

He further noted that the individuals who accompanied the late MMC in the car are yet to be formally identified.

In a statement released by the family, they expressed that his passing leaves an irreplaceable void and his legacy will forever remain entrenched in the hearts of those who knew him.

Details regarding Mngwevu’s memorial and funeral service will be communicated in due course as officials work on the repatriation of his body to South Africa.
