The City of Ekurhuleni Metro is reportedly owed more than R123-million by provincial government departments, according to the city’s spokesperson. The Department of Education is said to owe R109.2-million, with the Department of Health sitting at a staggering R9.9 million, while the Department of Infrastructure owes R4 million.
In an attempt to collect these debts, the city has sent electricity disconnection notices to 189 schools. Other government facilities, such as courts, military bases, and regional offices, are already experiencing power cuts implemented by the city.
The National Association of School Governing Bodies has raised concerns about this, citing that it will disrupt classes because schools depend on electricity to function.
“If electricity is cut, there will be no proper teaching. Much of the work teachers do depends entirely on having power. We are calling on the department to urgently make arrangements so that education can continue without disruption,” the association said.
