Officers caught extorting immigrants during Easter operations

The South African Police Service’s commitment to internal integrity was put to the test during the Safer Easter Operations in the Johannesburg CBD on Thursday, resulting in the arrest of two of its own members for corruption and extortion.

The officers were apprehended after a preliminary investigation revealed they were allegedly soliciting bribes from an undocumented traveler.

According to a police media statement, the two members were found in the company of an illegal immigrant whose passport had expired. It is alleged that the officers had just accepted a bribe from the individual to overlook their legal status.

The Provincial Anti-Corruption Unit was immediately called to the scene, where the two officials and the illegal immigrant were detained. During the arrest, investigators seized R3 000 in cash and the immigrant's expired passport as evidence.

These arrests are part of a broader, collaborative effort involving the Johannesburg District Office and Crime Intelligence to root out officers who specifically target vulnerable individuals to solicit bribes.

Acting Provincial Commissioner of Police in Gauteng, Major General Mbuso Khumalo, condemned the criminal acts, stating that while it is disheartening to arrest colleagues, the action should serve as a clear deterrent to others.

Khumalo emphasised that members must adhere to the SAPS Code of Conduct and do the right thing even when no one is watching, while also commending the alertness of the officer who initiated the arrest.

The SAPS has reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and accountability, noting that internal corruption undermines public trust and compromises the effectiveness of policing.

They have urged the public to continue reporting any criminal activities involving police officers to ensure the service remains beyond reproach.

Both the officials and the illegal immigrant are scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, 7 April 2026.
