Gauteng MEC for Social Development, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, provided an emotional airport send-off for a young flag football team departing for Kenya.
The Eagles, an under-13 squad from Eldorado Park and Soweto, are travelling to Nairobi to compete in the prestigious NFL Flag Africa Tournament.
Nkomo-Ralehoko reminded the excited youngsters before their departure that they were already champions long before stepping onto the sports field.
“You have already shown that hard work, discipline and determination can open doors.
“Go make South Africa proud,” Nkomo-Ralehoko said to the young athletes at the OR Tambo International Airport just before their departure.
Her encouraging words reinforced the Gauteng Department of Social Development’s ongoing commitment to creating tangible opportunities that empower children from historically disadvantaged communities.
This remarkable journey began through the Come Back Missions Youth Development Initiative, which specialises in early intervention and youth upliftment.
The team secured the unique honour of representing the country after triumphantly winning the regional Youth American Flag Football League under-13 title.
Nkomo-Ralehoko further stressed that investing in young people successfully changes their lives, as it provides positive alternatives to substance abuse and crime.
As the Eagles prepare to compete against heavyweights from Kenya, Nigeria, Ghana, and Egypt, they carry the immense pride of Gauteng and their local communities.
