Jailed doctor Nandipha Magudumana is grappling with a devastating personal loss from behind prison walls, as uncertainty looms over whether she will be allowed to attend her mother’s funeral.
Magudumana is mourning the death of her mother, Nokuzola Sikeleni, who passed away on Thursday in Port Shepstone. The loss has dealt a heavy emotional blow to the accused, who remains in custody at the Bizzah Makhate Correctional Centre in the Free State while awaiting trial for her alleged role in aiding the escape of convicted criminal Thabo Bester.
The family confirmed the death, with her father, Zolile Sikeleni, expressing heartbreak at the possibility that his daughter may not be present to bid her final farewell. Funeral arrangements are currently underway.
Magudumana’s lawyer, Machini Motloung, has stepped in to ensure she receives psychological support during this period and is kept informed of the funeral plans. He has also indicated that efforts are being made to secure permission for her to attend.
The Department of Correctional Services says compassionate leave may be granted under strict conditions. Applications are assessed based on factors such as security risk, inmate behaviour, and the nature of the bereavement, in line with the Correctional Services Act.
Magudumana’s legal troubles date back to April 2023, when she was arrested in Arusha, Tanzania, alongside Bester after fleeing South Africa. She is accused of orchestrating his dramatic 2022 prison escape by faking his death in a cell fire.
Now, as her high-profile case unfolds, Magudumana faces a deeply personal moment of grief — with no certainty that she will be granted the chance to say her final goodbye.
