The Johannesburg District Management has dismissed as misleading a series of recycled photographs circulating on social media that allegedly show members of the Hillbrow and Johannesburg police stations involved in corruption.

Management says the images are outdated and being taken out of context in a deliberate attempt to damage the reputation of officers at the two stations.

“One of the photos currently being shared carries a caption falsely claiming police were targeting immigrants for bribes. In reality, the image was taken during a joint multi-agency operation where SAPS members were enforcing COVID-19 regulations in line with the Disaster Management Act during the pandemic,” management said.

Authorities have called on social media users to act responsibly and refrain from sharing old material that spreads misinformation and misleads the public.
