Finance MEC presents a pro-people and growth budget earlier today
Gauteng Finance MEC, Lebogang Maile, officially tabled the R179.2-billion provincial budget at 10:00 today, March 10, 2026, delivering a message of stability and hope for the country’s economic heartland.
Despite a challenging national fiscal environment, the provincial government has prioritized a people-first approach that ensures the most vital services remain well-funded and accessible to all residents.
This year’s budget is particularly significant as it balances the need for strict financial discipline with a warm commitment to improving the daily lives of the 16 million people living in Gauteng.
The most heartening aspect of the announcement is that roughly the vast majority of the provincial purse is being poured directly into the social cluster.
The Education and Health Departments have received the largest portions of the budget to cater to the province’s growing population. Specifically, Education has been allocated R70.9-billion to support Early Childhood Development (ECD) and the Secondary School Improvement Programme, while Health received R66.0-billion to focus on frontline services and digital record-keeping.
Social Development follows with R5.7-billion to protect the vulnerable, and the Department of Human Settlements has been granted R5.5-billion to accelerate housing projects and hostel redevelopments. By placing such a large portion of the budget into schools, hospitals, and homes, the province is securing the long-term well-being and dignity of families in the province.
Beyond social services, the budget provides a clear plan for fixing and maintaining the infrastructure that keeps Gauteng moving.
The Department of Roads and Transport has been allocated R10.2-billion to manage highway maintenance and the new e-ticketing systems, while Economic Development receives R1.7-billion to drive provincial growth.
There is also a renewed focus on governance and safety, with the Office of the Premier allocated R1.6-billion, the Gauteng Provincial Legislature R1.4-billion, and Community Safety R2.1-billion.
Smaller but vital allocations include R1-billion for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, R865-million for Agriculture and Rural Development, R799-million for Treasury, and R680.5-million for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA).
This comprehensive funding plan, which includes nearly R1-billion dedicated to repairing aging water pipes, shows a Gauteng that is ready to work, build, and grow together toward a brighter future.
