…Urged to prepare for greater potential chaos as war in the region escalates
As tensions escalate between Iran, Israel, and the United States, South African authorities are urging citizens in the Middle East to remain alert and prepared.
The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (Dirco), alongside Acsa and Gift of the Givers, has called for immediate registration with nearest embassies.
Officials warn that early communication is lifesaving, as conflict zones can shift rapidly, causing sudden airspace closures and transport disruptions.
Dirco advises citizens to monitor official platforms, follow travel advisories strictly, and avoid high-risk gatherings. Keeping passports and essential documents accessible is critical for potential emergency coordination.
Meanwhile, Acsa cautions travellers to maintain constant contact with airlines regarding unexpected schedule changes or cancellations.
Gift of the Givers remains on standby to provide humanitarian or evacuation support, emphasising that preparedness is key to an effective response.
While there is no current directive to evacuate, authorities warn that waiting until a crisis peaks may limit options. The message to South Africans in the region is clear: stay informed, connected, and ready.
In such volatile environments, proactive readiness often makes the difference between being stranded and receiving vital support.
