Thousands arrested as Operation Shanela sweeps SA streets

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has concluded another high-impact week of Operation Shanela, resulting in the arrest of 16 542 suspects for various offences between 23 February and 1 March 2026.

This latest phase of the ongoing anti-crime initiative focused on removing dangerous individuals and illicit items from communities across all nine provinces.

Among those taken into custody were 2 393 wanted criminals linked to serious contact crimes, including murder, attempted murder, rape, and assault.

A significant portion of the operation focused on the recovery of illegal weaponry to prevent further violence.

“In ridding our communities of lethal weapons, police seized 145 firearms - including homemade guns, rifles, and shotguns - and confiscated 1 402 rounds of ammunition,” the SAPS confirmed in an official statement.

These efforts led to the arrest of 101 individuals for the illegal possession of firearms, while a further 92 suspects were detained for being in possession of unlicensed ammunition.

Authorities also clamped down on the illegal liquor trade and road safety violations during the week-long crackdown.

Police successfully arrested 789 suspects for dealing in liquor without the necessary permits, leading to the removal of approximately 20 820 litres of alcohol from society.

In a bid to make the roads safer, 749 motorists were also arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.

This continued momentum under Operation Shanela reflects the SAPS's commitment to reducing crime levels through visible and proactive policing.
