The search for City of Ekurhuleni Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Roads and Transport Management, Andile Mngwevu, has entered a critical stage following his disappearance in Mozambique over the weekend.
On Saturday, 17 January 2026, a vehicle carrying Mngwevu and four other individuals was overtaken by fast-moving floodwaters in the Chokwé area of Gaza Province, while the group was traveling on official business.
While the South African Rescue Mission has successfully established contact with one survivor who managed to escape the vehicle, the whereabouts and status of Mngwevu and the other three occupants remain unconfirmed.
The rescue operation, now bolstered by the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) who are assisting local Mozambican authorities to conduct spotting and rescue missions across the affected area.
This regional crisis has prompted the South African government to declare a National Disaster in several provinces, reflecting the severity of the floods that have devastated both South Africa and Mozambique.
The City of Ekurhuleni remains in constant communication with the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (Dirco) and the South African Mission in Mozambique to coordinate every available resource.
As the search continues, the municipality has committed to providing further updates only once verified information is received through official diplomatic channels.
