The Registrar of Labour Relations, Lehlohonolo Molefe, has announced his intention to cancel the legal registration of the Public Servants Association of South Africa (PSA).

This drastic regulatory action threatens the future operations of one of the country’s most prominent public sector labour organisations.

In a government gazette notice, Molefe cited severe non-compliance with statutory legislative frameworks as the primary driver behind this sudden intervention.

The decision follows an administrative assessment regarding how the association manages its legal obligations under national frameworks.

“The organisation is not a genuine trade union as envisaged in the LRA,” Molefe states in the gazette.

This declaration by Molefe forms the baseline of the department’s case against the State employee representative body.

The State maintains that the entity failed to satisfy foundational regulatory hurdles over an extended reporting period, specifically failing to comply with financial auditing and record-keeping provisions.

All interested parties and union leadership have now been invited to organise and submit urgent written representations to save the entity from complete de-registration.

These critical submissions must be delivered directly to the departmental offices located within Pretoria to avoid an automatic termination of status.

Stakeholders have exactly 60 days from the official date of publication to properly formulate and finalise their defence arguments.
