The Democratic Alliance’s ‘clean governance façade’ fades as corruption claims rock the party
John Steenhuisen, the leader of the Democratic Alliance, finds himself embroiled in an escalating corruption conundrum that threatens to significantly compromise his public image ahead of the party’s critical elective conference in April 2026.
The storm around Steenhuisen currently hinges on explosive allegations of illicit dealings in the lion bone trade, accusations of abuse of power within his own party, and questions regarding his personal and party-funded financial discipline.
At the heart of the allegations are claims linking Steenhuisen to the captive lion industry, prompting the Umkhonto We Sizwe Party (MK Party) to issue calls for criminal accountability against Steenhuisen and DA spokesperson, Willie Aucamp - who has since been appointed Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE).
The MK Party this week issued a blistering statement calling for criminal accountability.
“We call on the Hawks to investigate John Steenhuisen and Willie Aucamp for their role in facilitating and participating in the commercial trading of lion bones for private and commercial interests,” MK Party stated in a blistering statement on 15 January 2026.
The party further stressed that Steenhuisen and Aucamp’s alleged conduct constitutes corruption, ethical misconduct, and a betrayal of the public trust, as it aims to enrich well-connected individuals within the captive breeding industry.
The MK Party subsequently formally reported the matter to the South African Police Service at the Morningside Police Station the next day, 16 January, to force a legal inquiry into these claims.
Adding fuel to the fire, Dion George, who resigned from the DA this week, has emerged as a formidable Steenhuisen critic. In his televised public resignation on 15 January, Aucamp’s predecessor in the DFFE portfolio launched a series of scathing accusations.
George framed Steenhuisen as a leader who has lost his moral compass.
“I cannot remain in a party that has, through the actions of its current leader, John Steenhuisen, been captured by the ANC and other criminal interests,” he declared, casting a spotlight on the internal rot that has festered at the top ranks of the DA.
He went on further to link this alleged capture to the DA leader’s private struggles.
“…Steenhuisen as the DA leader has been captured because of his personal financial vulnerabilities,” he said, adding “Steenhuisen, as the DA leader and as a GNU negotiator, is abusing his power to advance his own political agenda, which serves his own interests, and not those of the DA nor South Africa.”
The gravity of these accusations has transcended political rhetoric, as George pointed to his own refusal to compromise as the reason for his fallout with the leadership.
“In that leadership role (as Minister), I did not bow, bend or blink under the pressure of the ANC, illicit wildlife traffickers or the criminal captive lion industry in particular,” George stated, suggesting that his removal was a tactical hit that aimed to satisfy outside interests.
George’s narrative is bolstered by a formal ethics complaint currently before Parliament’s Joint Committee on Ethics and Members’ Interests, which accuses Steenhuisen of the abuse of public office and the misrepresentation of Cabinet and government positions for narrow party-political benefit.
George also highlighted Steenhuisen’s lack of discipline with DA resources, while dismissing the party’s internal exoneration of the DA leader’s credit card use. This after he had initially alleged that the DA leader had used the party’s card for personal items such as Uber Eats, petrol and hotel accommodation.
“The only way a 'full reconciliation' could occur is by subsequently cooking the books,” George said.
When compounded with the fact that a default judgment of nearly R150 000 was granted against Steenhuisen last year for unpaid personal credit card debt, the image of a fiscally responsible leader has taken a tumble.
As the DA’s elective conference looms, the confluence of these allegations presents a formidable challenge to Steenhuisen, as he is still expected to face internal disciplinary proceedings as a direct result of his internal feud with George - an unprecedented position for a sitting leader.
