The high-stakes drama surrounding the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial will intensify this morning (Tuesday, 20 January 2026) as the state continues its grueling cross-examination of defense witness Sifiso Gwabini Zungu.
Central to the proceedings today is a fundamental clash of narratives. Zungu had denied any gathering took place at his hostel, whereas his uncle, Constable Sizwe Zungu, previously testified that the accused met there to plot the 2014 hit.
State Advocate George Baloyi will focus on glaring inconsistencies regarding Zungu’s prior interactions with police, particularly inconsistencies in his account of a bribe allegedly paid to investigating officers.
The prosecution will also challenge Zungu’s claims of police brutality, where the the lack of medical evidence to support his allegations of torture will likely be questioned.
As the morning progresses, the state will further aim to dismantle Zungu credibility with the intended objective of reinforcing its theory of a premeditated murder.
This is a developing story.
